Feed the Change MKE

Northwest Side-Led Food Access Campaign

Our Goal

Secure a $1 million investment in the Milwaukee Fresh Food Fund from the City of Milwaukee. We will demand that these funds be allocated to establishing locally-owned and operated grocery stores, community gardens, farmer's markets and other food access points desired by residents. We'll also demand nutritional education programs for food providers and their consumers.

We deserve to eat with dignity and choice.

We deserve to eat with dignity and choice.

The Problem

Residents on Milwaukee’s Northwest Side don’t have access to accessible, quality, healthy food. Due to Milwaukee’s food apartheid (systemically inequitable distribution of resources addressing hunger), Milwaukee’s Northwest Side residents lack sufficient local grocery stores, community gardens, and farmer’s markets to feed their families. Sole reliance on unpredictable federal benefits, i.e. SNAP, corporate and chain grocery stores, and under-resourced food pantries to meet the needs of our neighbors is dehumanizing, disgraceful and disempowering for everyday people.

Our Vision

We want a food system that gives Black people on the Northwest Side dignified and choiceful food access. This means having access to quality, healthy food, along with knowledge and opportunity about acquiring, growing, preserving, and preparing our own food. We envision a NWS, laying the foundation for dignified and choiceful food access city-wide.

Join Our Campaign

We can’t rely on big corporations. If we leave food access up to them, Black and brown people will be excluded from that process. That's why it's time for us to force city leadership to take accountability and prioritize food access. This begins with building and activating everyday people's power to achieve their food access visions.

Resources

Our Team

After years of building relationships and power on Milwaukee's Far Northwest Side (in Aldermanic Districts 5 and 9),  AART empowered a few of our members from the area to lead. You can find your aldermanic district here: https://bit.ly/ELECTEDMKE

Our Northwest Side (NWS) member-leaders engaged with neighbors and residents, researched, and strategized to develop our campaign's vision and action plans. As we run this Northwest SIde-led campaign, we invite all Milwaukee residents to participate in campaign trainings, actions, and events to show our collective power and win greater food access throughout the city of Milwaukee.
