Reimagining, Dreaming and Resting: A Year of Charting New Paths to Freedom

2024 Annual Report

“Welcome to the DreamSpace. Another world is possible.” -Tricia Hersey

A message from our ED

Fighting for Black liberation isn't an easy feat, and we need to build and condition fortified bodies aligned with rest, rigor and discipline to organize, sustain and win.

AART’s staff has practiced these principles over the past year while expanding our conversations with donors and reach across the far Northwest Side, broadening our membership base, building the capacity of our leaders, and building infrastructure.

While our base has grown, so has the opportunity to clearly define and deepen our organizing model to support our mission to build power in service of Black liberation. In 2025, we will respond to this timely invitation to develop a more robust organizing model that supports our growing base and vision.

We also recognized some crucial pieces that supported us in broadening our bases, including AART staff creating commitments to bring forth our personal and collective vision of a joyful, political home for Black people to thrive in liberated, interconnected communities.

AART’s staff is committed to loving and transforming themselves through movement and exercise, cooking, deepening authentic relationships, taking time off work, creating and honoring boundaries, learning and unlearning, and faith-based and healing practices to support their minds, bodies, and spirits.

What work are you willing to do to deepen the practices and organizing that are necessary to be in service of Black liberation and our future?

IMAGINING AND VISIONING

  • We hosted two community input sessions to engage residents in conversations about what kind of community safety campaign they wanted to build.

  • AART learned through these gatherings:

“A thriving Northwest Side will be a bustling environment where people feel safe enough to live and be. Area residents and frequenters will have a variety of travel means throughout creative, green, social, and local business spaces with plenty of access to as well as healthy and real food. Its economy will be people-centered & life affirming and the whole thing will feel nostalgic.”

Programs & Logistics

  • Volunteer Engagement: In 2024 we had 23 volunteers help expand our capacity at program events and planning phases! Many of our volunteers moved deeper into our base by way of membership and program leadership opportunities. We were excited to have four volunteers onboard our fundraising committee and support our fundraising efforts with their unique skills and expertise!

  • AART’s Liberation Roadmap: At AART’s Liberation Roadmap to Resilience, we gathered with nearly 100 community members to uplift the wisdom and practices we can embrace through this transformative journey towards liberation. Our fundraising efforts brought $2,500 in event underwriters, $7,250 in program sponsors and a little over $5,000 in individual donations – totaling over $15,000! Also 2024 was the first year we focused on incorporating fundraising into this community building space, and we hope to raise even more in 2025.
